Fedil S.r.l.

The beginnings

FEDIL traces its origins back to the early 1900s, in the province of Florence, when the 35-year-old Fortunato Spagnoli founded the company of the same name by taking over a cooperative of building workers on the outskirts of Florence.

In the following years, the first works began in the province of Florence in the water regulation and forestation sectors; in the inter-war period, the business diversified, also opening up to trading in building materials.

In the 1950s, his son Ezio took over the management of the company and gave a strong impetus to private building and public works. Ezio's major role in Italy's post-war reconstruction earned him the honours of Knight in 1972 and Officer in 1977, awarded to him by President of the Republic Giovanni Leone.

1970 - 1980

In 1972, Ezio's son Ermanno Spagnoli took over the company and, together with his brothers, he gave new impetus to the company's growth and activities.

During this period, while the company structure opened up to shareholders outside the family, the company extended its activities on several fronts, from road building to the packaging and distribution of concrete, from the building of sports facilities to the construction of residential settlements.

The development of important school complexes, the headquarters of the Magistrate's Court in Borgo San Lorenzo (Florence), a sports and swimming centre and the Mugello Hospital date back to this period.

In the same period, several residential projects were built in Florence and neighbouring municipalities, as well as the AMITA and FERRAGAMO industrial complexes and part of the NUOVO PIGNONE factory in Florence (now Baker Huges).

The production and use of bituminous conglomerates for road paving began; in this field, in addition to carrying out numerous works on provincial and state roads, an experimental material developed in its own laboratory and used for the paving of the new Mugello International Racetrack was particularly successful.

In the same years, he realised a branch of the Fiora aqueduct in the province of Grosseto, two dams on the Rincine and Moscia streams, a tourist residence and a 'helio-assisted' residential project on the island of Capraia (LI), a residence in Florence, and numerous other residential projects.

1980 - 2000

During the Eighties, in addition to a constant commitment to residential construction, the company realised, among other things, industrial buildings in the Scopeti Productive Settlements Plan in the municipality of Rufina (FI), including the new FILA factory, urbanisation works, the recovery of buildings for the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, and a variety of experimental construction projects with high technological content.

The Nineties were again characterised by the commitment to residential construction, accompanied by initiatives developed in collaboration with the major manufacturing companies of the time.

Among these, it is worth mentioning the grouping formed with the Pontello company and the Baldassini company to promote the construction of the new stadium for the Italia 90 World Cup.

2000 - 2008

More recent years have seen the development of an important commercial and management complex in the city of Livorno, the construction of two hotels on behalf of the Spanish chain AC HOTELS, the building of the new Leopolda residential district in Florence, and the construction, through the associated company Pianvallico S.p.A., of an important business centre in the municipality of San Piero a Sieve (FI), which earned it the "Prize for the best territorial marketing action project 2008".

The entry of Riccardo Spagnoli, Ermanno's son, together with his brothers Roberto and Renzo, brings the fourth generation of entrepreneurs onto the company board.

Riccardo Spagnoli, in particular, also takes on increasingly significant roles in the field of associationism, arriving over time to hold the positions of Member of the Board of the Florence Chamber of Commerce, President of the Cassa Edile of Florence, President of the National Association of Building Constructors of Florence, President of the National Association of Building Constructors of Tuscany, Vice President of the National Association of Building Constructors and Member of the Arbitrators of Confindustria Nazionale.

2008 - Today

At the end of 2008, the world experienced a deep economic recession that caused a crisis in many building companies, forcing the family to downsize the construction business. Nevertheless, this period saw the construction of the new Esselunga super store in Galluzzo (Florence), the METRO distribution centre in Florence, part of the TSH in Florence on former Ferrovie dello Stato property, a business centre in Rome and, in 2016, the PAM shopping centre in Bologna.

The pandemic crisis of 2020, while bringing many activities to a halt, represents a turning point for the sector. Indeed, in order to strengthen the now long-standing tradition in the construction industry, the Spagnoli family started collaborating with L2I Engineering and Consulting, a design company owned by two well-known Florentine professionals, with whom FEDIL was established, a true General Contractor capable of combining consolidated know-how in the construction sector with specific professionalism in the field of complex designs.
